Getting published is not the goal

Dec 18, 2013 | Book Publishing

I’ve been looking at some other writing coach’s websites this morning and I noticed that many of them treat “getting published” or “seeing your book in print” as the client’s goal. I’m sure that’s right for some people, but not for the people who choose to work with me. Maybe you’re like them.

My clients are business people. They want to write a book and get it published, but for them getting published is a milestone on the way to some greater goal. Here are a few of those goals.

  • Demonstrate expertise.
  • Increase fees
  • Get more or better speaking engagements
  • Build name recognition
  • Increase revenue
  • Explain what they do to potential clients

Bottom Line

Before you start writing your book, think about that bigger goal. Why are you writing the book? What do you expect to change for you after the book is published?

Your Turn

What’s your goal beyond the book?
