Book recommendations for business leaders: 9/21/17

Sep 21, 2017 | Reading Lists

Stephen King says that if you want to be a writer, there are two things you must do: read a lot and write a lot. This is about the “read a lot” part. I include reading lists and book reviews that will help you do business more effectively and write better for business.

In this post, I point you to reviews of The Captain Class: The Hidden Force that Creates the World’s Greatest Teams, Collaborating with the Enemy, What Motivates Getting Things Done: Procrastination, Emotions, and Success, The Power of People Skills: How to Eliminate 90% of Your HR Problems and Dramatically Increase Team and Company Morale and Performance, and Driving Digital: The Leader’s Guide to Business Transformation Through Technology.

From Wharton: Why ‘Quiet’ Leadership Matters in Sports – and Life

“The acronym GOAT in sports stands for Greatest of All Time. It’s a designation currently given to NFL quarterback Tom Brady, and it’s been bestowed on NBA star Michael Jordan and hockey great Wayne Gretsky. All three of these men played in championship games, but being the greatest of all time doesn’t necessarily lead to that end. While having one remarkable player is a huge plus, successful teams also typically have a core characteristic: a great captain, someone who steers the ship through tough times and can be counted on all the time. In his new book, Sam Walker, deputy editor for enterprise at The Wall Street Journal, looks at the greatest teams of all time and their captains.”

From Michael McKinney: How to Work with People You Don’t Agree with or Like or Trust

“IN Collaborating with the Enemy, Adam Kahane shares a joke he heard while working in Cape Town, South Africa that exemplifies the stalemate we feel when trying to work with people who just can’t see it our way:”

From Skip Prichard: What Motivates Getting Things Done

“Mary Lamia, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst, a professor at the Wright Institute at Berkeley, and the author of numerous books. Her latest is What Motivates Getting Things Done: Procrastination, Emotions, and Success. In this book, she highlights the role of emotions and how our innate biological systems motivate us to achieve.”

From Desda Moss: How to Power Up People Skills

“There is a shocking ‘execution gap’ between the goals organizations set and the ones they actually achieve, writes Trevor Throness , author of The Power of People Skills: How to Eliminate 90% of Your HR Problems and Dramatically Increase Team and Company Morale and Performance (Career Press, 2017). To prove his point, Throness cites the results of a Harris Interactive survey of more than 23,000 full-time employees.”

From Eric D. Brown: Driving Digital by Isaac Sacolick – a book review

“Don’t get me wrong – there’s lots of theory in this book about WHY companies need to transform their organization but just as importantly (or maybe more importantly) there is more discussion of HOW to drive this transformation.”
