Make Imposter Syndrome Work for You

Feb 6, 2025 | Better Writing

I have a confession to make. Sometimes, I pretend to be a writer.

When I was first working for myself, I used several tricks to get my work done. Her’s an example.

I pretended I was going to the office. In the morning, I would get up, shower, eat breakfast, and put on my suit. Then I’d go outside to the car, fire it up, and drive around the block. I’d park in front of the house, trot up the stairs, and head for my office in the back bedroom.

I did the same thing with writing. I pretended to be a writer. And you know what writers do, they write. So that’s what I did. I wrote.

You can do things in your imagination that you can’t do in real life. Imposture syndrome is just a part of your imagination. You’re imagining that you’re not good enough or a fake. Let’s turn that puppy around.

Next time you catch yourself getting bogged down and imagine yourself as an imposter, pretend you’re a writer instead. Then you’ll do what writers do. You’ll write.

Don’t let your own brain beat you. Use it to get through the barren stretches and the rough spots. Make impostor syndrome work for you.

I do that sometimes when the words won’t come or I’m tempted to do something unproductive, I pretend to be a writer. And I write.
