When it’s time for Maya Angelou to write, she rents a hotel room. My friend is working on a book about the famous people he’s met in his life. When it’s time for him to write, he retreats to his minivan with his laptop. I go to my writing cave and close the door.

Writers need privacy to work.

You won’t get much quality writing done if you’re distracted or interrupted. So find a place to write where you’ll have the uninterrupted time you need to do good work.

Close the door.

The door may be the single most underappreciated productivity tool for writers. Find a place with a door. It can be a hotel room or your van or a room in your house or somewhere else. Then close the door and get to work.
