Bette Midler is great singer and performer. She’s not known for her songwriting. Even so she’s got some advice that every writer should hear.

“Cherish forever what makes you unique, ‘cuz you’re really a yawn if it goes!”

That thing that makes you unique should make your writing unique, too. Write like yourself, using the kind of words and phrases that you use when you talk to a friend. Share your stories and experiences. Give the reader your unique perspective.
