You can learn a lot from a good example. That’s why every week I highlight one business blog that I think sets a good example. This week, we’ll look at Dan McCarthy’s Great Leadership.
Dan is the Director of Executive Development Programs (EDP) at the Whittemore School of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire. From my perspective, Dan’s the perfect person for the job. He’s spent a career in leadership development, learning all the way. One of the places where he shares his knowledge is his blog, Great Leadership.
Dan writes posts that are longer than those I usually want clients to write. It’s OK, through, because he’s got a lot to share and every post is thoughtful, comprehensive, and includes pointers to other resources. The ultimate answer to the question “How long should my posts be?” is “Long enough to do the job and not a word longer.”
In addition to his regular posts, Dan organizes and is the most frequent host of the Leadership Development Carnival. Blog carnivals can be a great way to build blog traffic, but they’re also a lot of work. To get an idea of how much work, check out “The November 2011 Leadership Development Carnival” where Dan explains what he does when he hosts.
Dan also does an excellent job of using guest posts. Click here to check out a guest post titled, “Living in Pursuit of the OS!M” that Steve Farber wrote for Great Leadership.
And, here are some representative posts from the last year or so. Read them with an eye toward what you can learn from Dan McCarthy’s example.
“‘Fun’ at Work”
“Free Leadership Development Program: Becoming a Great Leader”
“How to Evaluate a Training Program”
“Reflections on 2010: The More I Know About Leadership Development the Less I Know”
Read, enjoy, and learn.
Was that helpful? If it was you may want to check the complete list of blogs I’ve reviewed.
